Sights along I-94 in North Dakota and into Montana

Day three of our road trip found us in Fargo, ND. I have to admit, my preconceptions of North Dakota were completely off base. For some reason I expected ND to be flat and treeless (was told the state tree was the telephone pole). It was actually a very picturesque state with rolling hills. There were tornadoes and thunderstorms in the area so we naturally took time to photograph the cloud formations. Along the way we stopped at Frontier Village and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We crossed over into Montana at days end and spent the night in Miles City. …

Fine dining around Valpo

These photos are from dining establishments in and around Valparaiso, IN. Next week will mark four years that I have been a regular visitor to Valpo. When I first started coming here I used to think that I would have to go to Chicago to get a decent meal. Steak ’n Shake and Bob Evans were not exactly my idea of fine dining. I eventually found a couple places that would satisfy my culinary desires, but even Cracker Barrel can only go so far. During my most recent visit to Indiana I did more exploring and discovered that there are …

Dining in Valparaiso, IN

When I visit Tanya in Valparaiso, there are a couple of restaurants I try to always make time to visit. My favorite restaurant in Valpo has to be Don Quijote Spanish Restaurante. We discovered this gem due to a billboard on the highway claiming it was the only Spanish restaurant in Indiana. I guess a second Spanish restaurant has opened in Indy, so they will have to settle for being the first and, most likely, the best. Elena, one of the owners is very friendly and seems to always hire friendly people as servers. We always enjoy ourselves and having …

Photos from Benihana, Torrance

To be honest, I try to avoid restaurants that are part of a chain. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule. In 2009, I introduced Tanya to Benihana’s and they suddenly became a chain restaurant that I became a regular diner. While I have become readily familiar with the “egg roll,” the “disco” onion and the “beating heart” rice, I can safely say that I have never left Benihana, Torrance hungry or disappointed. Here are a few photos from our frequent visits to this Teppanyaki style steak house. Back to Benihana Photos Back to Benihana Photos

The great doughnut challenge

It started innocently enough. A friend of mine posted a photo of a doughnut on Facebook. I commented on it. Someone else responded to my comment and a conversation ensued. Eventually my friend returned to the post and insisted we were in the presence of greatness. So, here we were. Three guys with three ideas of where to go to get a great doughnut. Something had to be done. These photos were taken at Dynamo Donuts in San Francisco, Stan’s Donuts in Santa Clara and Psycho Donuts in San Jose, CA. Enjoy

Photos from Wasa Sushi, Newport Beach

A couple of friends of mine read this blog, and follow me on Facebook (see sidebar –>), and as a result have seen many photos from my visits to Gu Gu Sushi. A couple of weeks ago, we decided that we would have a sushi exchange program. I would visit their favorite sushi establishment and then we would all go to Gu Gu and see who had the best sushi. Last Saturday, I joined them at Wasa On the Bluffs, in Newport Beach, CA. It was a fun ride there and back, and the sushi was good. They are more …

A Gu Gu Sushi Milestone

It is no secret that my favorite place to get sushi is at Gu Gu Sushi & Roll in Hermosa Beach. I have been dining there for almost two years, and have yet to leave disappointed. In fact, one of the things I enjoy the most about Gu Gu, is that it really does not matter what I order, I know it is going to be good. Gu Gu has close to 200 various rolls and sashimi available. They have multiple menus and I decided I wanted to try every roll they offered, so I took one of their menus …

Alex

If you follow my adventures enough to be looking at these specific words, you probably picked up on the fact that I am a huge fan of Gu Gu Sushi & Roll, in Hermosa Beach, CA. I have introduced people from around the globe to this sushi goodness. No one has ever left disappointed. This can be attributed to a fantastic menu, the freshest ingredients, and two great chefs. I recently discovered that one of the two, Alex, has turned in his two weeks notice. He asked me to come in one last time before he left. Two friends and …

Some photos of food

I am sure, as a child, you were told to not play with your food. I know I was. Of course, no one suggested that I should not take pictures of my food. Besides, sometimes the presentation of the meal is almost as much fun as the tastiness. Heck, I would be kidding myself if I did not admit that sometimes the food looked better that it tasted. This is a compilation of some of my favorite food photos. I am trying something new here. Not only am I using a slide show format, but you have the option to …

341 Days Later

Tanya wanted to go to Barnes & Noble to do some research. I was planning on buying The Kid some books for Christmas, so it made sense to tag along and finish up my Christmas shopping. I bought four classics and Tanya discovered she already owned the best book for her needs. Since our errands were complete and Lucille’s was across the parking lot, we decided to stop by for dinner. While eating I recalled that my very first Project 365 photo was taken at Lucille’s. I decided that my photo of the day for day 342 would be of …
