Photos of Chopperfest 2010

Photos of the David Mann Chopperfest 2010 Ventura, CA – December 12 There are probably not many people that have influenced the motorcycle building community as much as David Mann. Even if you do not build motorcycles, his artwork definitely portrayed common experiences of Harley riders back in the day. The man was a living legend. Shortly after his death in 2004, the David Mann Chopperfest was conceived. Yesterday was the 7th Annual David Mann Chopperfest. The festival, held in Ventura, CA, is a combination bike show and motorcycle swap meet, with music, food, drink, vendors, art displays and lots …

Bartels’ Harley-Davidson Customer Appreciation Breakfast

Photos From Bartels’ H-D Pancake Breakfast Marina del Rey, CA – December 12, 2010 Bartel’s Harley-Davidson is the Harley dealer to the stars. I am not sure when they achieved that status, but I am pretty confident I have been coming there since before then. They were a small outfit, tucked on the side streets when I first discovered them. Since I rode my bike more frequently than the average rider, it did not take long to become recognized. I have since bought a couple new Harleys from them, including my new Limited. Yesterday, Bartel’s had a free pancake breakfast …

Motorcycle Toy Run

Sunday, Tanya and I went out to Chatsworth for a motorcycle toy run. This is something I have been doing for about 30 years. Bikers used to get a bad rap before Harley-Davidson became a status symbol for lawyers and doctors, so I do what I can to clean up that image. My picture of the day for day 339 is of me on my Limited, toys strapped on and loaded into the saddle bags, headed out to a toy run sponsored by the HA. There must be a clubhouse in heaven set aside for them.

Ride To Cooks Corner

Saturday, my son called and asked if I wanted to go for a ride. Since it was not raining and Tanya was game, I was all for it. We met down in San Juan Capistrano then rode over to Cook’s Corner for lunch. All in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon. My photo of the day 338 was taken at Cook’s Corner. Featured are Tanya with my Limited and Daniel with his Fat Boy.

Photos of the SFV Big Red Machine Annual Toy Run

Big Red Machine Annual Toy Run Chatsworth, CA – December 5, 2010 A Christmas tradition I have participated in for as long as I can remember is attending motorcycle toy runs. I have some great memories from them and both of my kids were regular attendees. Heck, my daughter was nursed under the shade of a Harley-Davidson at a toy run back in 1982. Since bikers always get a bad rap, I feel it is my responsibility to go to at least one a year. Today, the SFV Big Red Machine held their annual toy run to benefit needy children. …

Prize Winning Photo

Some things are meant to be. On Saturday, I told my friend Phil to make sure he was free on December 12, as the 7th Annual David Mann Chopperfest was coming up. It is up in Ventura, and is a nice ride from here. Besides, I need to hunt down some vintage Harleys and we have a mutual friend that will be coming down from up north, so there are several reasons to attend. Wednesday morning, I received an email from a motorcycle enthusiasts forum called MotoZania.com that I am a member of. They were having a contest in which …

Back On the Road

Regular readers may recall that around Labor Day I was complaining about being in a lot of pain. Shortly after that I left for Europe for a few weeks. After I got home I eventually saw a doctor that treated my problem rather than my symptom. In a nutshell, I was not able to do any significant motorcycle riding since the beginning of September! That is forever in my book. Saturday ended that streak. My picture of the day for Saturday is of me at a gas stop after a couple hundred miles of riding. It sure is nice to …

Photos of a Southern California Day

Saturday Afternoon Ride Escondido to Seal Beach, CA It has been a long time since I went on a decent bike ride, so I was more than due for today’s ride. My friend Phil wanted to come along, but he only wanted to do a short ride to Cook’s Corner, about 50 miles from here. I rode my Limited and he was on his Glide. As soon as we got off the freeway he suggested we go to Stone Brewery instead. I was not real happy the last time we went there, but since it was 50 miles further I …

California Highway 99 – Modesto

Photos From California Highway 99 Modesto, CA A few miles south of Ripon we came into Modesto, the first of the prospective towns my friends from Arkansas considered moving to. I always say that you can tell a lot about a place by the motorcycles in it, so a stop at the Harley-Davidson dealership made sense. For those of you that feel I am not giving an accurate portrayal of Modesto or any of the other towns in this CA Hwy 99 series, these photos are only meant to give a first impression of these places, from an unbiased perspective. …

Phil

Twenty some odd years ago I was riding out to Hermosa Beach to meet my then wife at our favorite watering hole for lunch. Soon after being seated, this guy I recognized vaguely came up to talk. In a nutshell, he had a Harley-Davidson Sportster and wanted to know where I went to have work done on my bike. I told him I did all my own work. He told us a story of woe, having brought his bike into a local shop that was notorious for doing crappy work. To make a long story short, I gave him my …
