A touch of Germany at the Alpine Inn in Torrance

This review is of the Alpine Inn at Alpine Village in Torrance, CA. A couple of weeks ago, Tanya and I had lunch at the Alpine Inn during a networking event with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce. We were impressed enough with the lunch that we figured we would have to make a return visit. As we were exiting I noticed a large chalkboard with numerous micro-brewery beers on tap listed. An Oatmeal Stout caught my eye, and I knew we would return. As it turns out, it was sooner than expected as we returned this past Sunday. I …

An American’s view of Barcelona – Street photography

Earlier this month I went to Barcelona, Spain to cover a trade show. In the past, Tanya would join me on my travels, be they be within the country or overseas. Unfortunately, her Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease (RAD aka Rheumatoid Arthritis or RA) has made international travel a thing of the past for her. Hopefully she will find a good drug combination that will put her back into remission, but until that happens I will be doing most of my travels solo. Since Tanya is unable to travel with me and I take far too many photos for her to sit …

Networking at Noon at the Alpine Village

Today we met with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) again for another Networking at Noon; this time at the Alpine Inn at Alpine Village in Torrance, CA. It was a well attended event and we met a few new people that I am sure we will be seeing again. Tanya’s company gave away a $500 gift certificate to one lucky winner, so I am positive we will be talking to her again. The food was very good. On the way out, I noticed they had a nice drought beer selection, so I have a feeling we will be …

Eating for better health

Okay, I know in my last RAD Caregiver post I said that my next article would be discussing stem cell research and Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease, but we recently started a group on Facebook, I Take Pictures of My Fruits and Vegetables Before I Juice Them, and we have had many people express interest in our new eating habits; in particular, what recipes we use. Well, the fact of the matter is that we do not have any recipes at all. However, we do have a lot of photos, so if you look at them you will see the recipe. I …

Christmas Dinner 2011

After our morning motorcycle ride, Tanya and I headed home to prepare to go to my dad’s for Christmas dinner. Tanya fixed her famous strawberry-pecan summer salad and I picked up a few bottles of wine from my Sort This Out Cellars stash. We then packed the car, loaded up the dogs and headed to my dad’s. Besides a couple brothers and a sister, there were my dad’s friends and friends of friends. I guess there were close to 20 people by the time all was said and done. As you can tell by the photos, we had a wide …

Photos from Prague

After leaving Amsterdam, I headed to Prague for a few days. These photos are primarily from around the Hotel Praja and the Silenzio Hotel. Unfortunately, I was again covering a trade show and the show hotel was on the outskirts of Prague. Every time I ventured away from the hotel I was pretty much stuck in a bus or taxi. There were some amazing views that I really wish I could have shot, but circumstances were out of my control for this trip. Back to Prague Photos Back to Prague Photos

Photos from Amsterdam via Paris

The day before I headed to Europe, I got a telephone call from KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Apparently they were canceling my non-stop flight from Chicago to Amsterdam. They wanted me to wait an additional day to leave Chicago. Since I expected to be compensated for the hotel room I had paid for in Amsterdam, KLM decided to pawn me off on Air France. Air France was able to cram me (literally) onto a flight from Chicago to Paris, then I could stretch out on a flight from Paris to Amsterdam. Not exactly how I wanted to start this trip, …

Photos from the Popcorn Fest Party at Pikk’s Tavern

There is a good chance you have heard of Orville Redenbacher and his famous popcorn, but did you know he was from Valparaiso, IN? In 1979 Valparaiso had their first Valparaiso Popcorn Festival to salute Redenbacher and popcorn. This is a two day event with a parade, a 5 mile run and other festivities. As my transportation is limited and the downtown streets are closed off, I once again missed the actual event. However, one of my favorite Valparaiso eateries, Pikk’s Tavern had a Popcorn Fest Party with musical entertainment. After leaving the hot air balloon festival we headed downtown …

Back to Indiana

I am back for what will likely be one of my last visits to Indiana. After a long train ride from Los Angeles, Tanya picked up Buddy and me at the Chicago Union Station. Our first stop on the way back to Valparaiso was to the town of Munster and Three Floyds Brew Pub. I discovered this place back in June and immediately fell in love with their beer. I can not say that I have tried any of their brews that I did not like. Since no visit to Valpo would be complete without a visit to Don Quijote …

A trip to Temecula wine country

I had a gift I wanted to give to my son and since he lives down by Temecula I decided I would kill two birds with one stone and pay a visit to the Temecula wine country. After securing a room, Tanya, Buddy and I headed out to the Inland Empire. After arriving at my son’s home we tried to find a winery, with a restaurant that stays open past 5:00 PM. I had only attempted to go wine tasting in Temecula once before and noticed that 5:00 seemed to be last call at most of the places I tried …
