Santa Claus comes to North Torrance

Santa Claus made a visit to several neighborhoods in North Torrance Tuesday evening, and judging by the turnout and smiles at just one stop; he was a huge hit. Sponsored by the Torrance Police Officers Association (TPOA), Santa’s Sleigh has been going up and down the streets of Torrance since at least 1992. To be honest, they have never gone down our street so I have only caught glimpses of the sleigh as it passed around a corner. Tonight I walked over to another neighborhood to check it out up close. The sleigh stops at either end of long blocks …

Business & Beer return visit to The Rockefeller

These photos are from our Business & Beer gathering last Thursday at The Rockefeller Gastropub in Hermosa Beach, CA. The Rockefeller has been one of our favorite destinations since we discovered them back in May. They offer a wide selection of craft beers on tap and have a food menu that seems to change with the seasons. You can always find something interesting on it. In addition, they constantly have wine and beer tastings and various food specials going on what seems daily. You should check them out if you haven’t, it is always a pleasant experience. Our group was …

Cheesy Christmas Sweaters

When I think about it, the concept of cheesy Christmas sweaters always seemed to be set against the backdrop of a 60’s or 70’s sitcom; or perhaps a Family Circle cartoon in the Sunday funnies, I did not really give any thought to the fact that this might be a real thing. Well, I have had my eyes opened. Saturday, Tanya and I joined some friends at their 3rd Annual Cheesy Christmas Sweater Party. Since I do not think I have really noticed a cheesy sweater before, I was not entirely sure what to expect in the way of cheesy …

Photos from the 2012 Strand Brewers Club Holiday Party

These photos were taken at the annual Strand Brewers Club holiday party which was held Saturday evening up in Rolling Hills. The Strand Brewers Club is a local group of home brewers dedicated to the art and science of homebrewing and beer education. I was somewhat familiar with the group as I have seen them at a couple of the beer festivals I attended this year and I have met some of their members through Business & Beer. Once we arrived at the party I recognized a few faces from visits to some of my favorite microbreweries. The Strand Brewers …

Photos of Mooneyes Xmas Party, Show & Drag, 2012

Saturday, December 8, 2012 was the annual Mooneyes Christmas Party, Car show and Drag Races at Irwindale Dragstrip. I am not really sure how long they have been having this event; but I have been photographing it since 2010. It is a fun event. The car show is limited to pre-1965 model years; and the drag races are limited to pre-1969 model years. In addition, there was a Pinup Girl contest, tons of vendors selling everything you could want to customize your hot rod or fuzzy dice for your lowrider as well as food and drink. Live music was provided …

Building Rose Parade floats at Fiesta Floats

Saturday, I headed out to Irwindale, CA to visit Fiesta Floats so I could take some photos of the building of the City of Torrance entry to the 2013 Rose Parade. As it turned out, Kaiser Permanente was having a Family Day for friends and family of Kaiser Permanente employees so there was a lot more going on than I expected. The Kaiser Permanente float was being showcased and they had magicians, crafts and games for the kids. They even let people help prepare things for the actual decorating of the float. The City of Torrance float is coming along …

These photos are from the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce Holiday Regional Mixer which was held last night, December 4, at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Rolling Hills Estates, CA. This was our second time attending the holiday regional mixer and I have to say, it is one of my favorite events of the year as far as the Chamber of Commerce is concerned. There was plenty of networking opportunities available with Chamber members representing Carson, El Segundo, Gardena Valley, Harbor City/Harbor Gateway, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, LAX Coastal Area, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Redondo Beach, San …

Candy Cane Lane at Sleepy Hollow ready for Christmas 2012

December is here and that means that the Sleepy Hollow area of Torrance has been transformed once again to Candy Cane Lane. Last night was the first night of the Sleepy Hollow Christmas Light Extravaganza so we decided to take a drive over and see if the neighborhood was ready yet. Since it was the first weekend not all the homes appeared to be ready yet; but as it was a little rainy the crowds were minimal so it was okay. You can be sure that as Christmas draws closer there will be more and more homes decorated and the …

50 shades of South Bay gray; a day at the beach

Every once in a while I need to just take a day off, away from the house for a while, and yesterday was that day. I had been seeing Facebook status updates mentioning big surf was coming and I figured that with the rain clouds that it would make for some nice photographs. Since Tanya has been feeling a lot better for the last few weeks, she has been able to use her Canon Rebel again; so she was excited to join me. Without bothering to look at the surf report, we headed over to the beach. We started off …
