Kiss a Gay Day at Chick-fil-A, Torrance

What if they threw a protest and nobody came? Well, apparently that is what happened with Kiss a Gay Day that was supposed to be happening at Chick-fil-A locations around the country. I went back to the Torrance location that had literally thousands of supporters on Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day that was held on Wednesday, and the only sign of anything gay was some vandalism done by a coward in the night. As I mentioned the other day, I walk past the Hawthorne and 182nd Street location daily. This morning, when I was walking the dogs, I noticed that there were …

Business N Beer at Strand Brewing Co, Torrance

These photos were taken at our latest Business N Beer get-together that we had last night at Strand Brewing Company in Torrance. As yesterday was International IPA Day, it was fitting that we met at a micro brewery that provides such nice ales, and in particular, a couple very nice IPA’s. The group was a little smaller than last week, but several people that were at Strand Brewing anyway worked their way over to our group to find out more about Business N Beer. Our host even mentioned how he had noticed people coming over to check us out; and …

Business N Beer at Monkish Brewing Company, Torrance

These photos are from our third Business N Beer gathering that we had last night at Monkish Brewing Company, in Torrance. We had a very nice group of people that showed up and it was our biggest group to date with about 17 or 18 attendees. The interesting thing, for me anyway, was that the group consisted of a few people from our first gathering at Select Beer Store; there were a few from our gathering last week at Abigaile and there were many people that were attending for the first time. As I looked around at our group it …

Networking at Noon at Ortega 120

Today we went to Ortega 120 in Redondo Beach for another Networking at Noon. I am sure it was pure coincidence that the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) scheduled two Networking at Noon events this month with the second one falling on National Tequila Day, and Ortega 120 boasting over 120 different kinds of tequila. I know I was not complaining. I have been to Ortega 120 a couple times, both being on Cinco de Mayo, so it was always really crowded. Going there for lunch gave me the opportunity to look around and check out the decor; it …

Photos of Madrona Marsh Torrance

Today we headed over to the Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance to take a few nature photos. The Madrona Marsh is what they call a vernal marsh in that it gets its water solely from rain; or melting snow, but primarily from rain around here. It is the last vernal marsh in the South Bay, and is one of the few wetlands in Los Angeles County. As it is July 21, the marsh is not very marshy but there are still some interesting things to photograph. The last time I went to Madrona Marsh was back when I was the …

Business N Beer, a new kind of networking group

Since we joined the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce late last year, we have had the pleasure of meeting and interacting with many small business owners in the South Bay area. Through these interactions I have been invited to join several service clubs and business networking groups. While I wish I had the time and money to join every service club the fact is I do not, so I volunteer my services to help publicize their fundraisers. As far as networking groups are concerned, I can definitely see the value in them but they all seem to come with obligations …

Beachwood BBQ & Brewing One Year Anniversary Party

These photos were taken Saturday at the Beachwood BBQ & Brewing One Year Anniversary Celebration, which was held at their Long Beach location on E. 3rd Street in Long Beach, CA. You might recall that I made my first visit to Beachwood Brewing a couple weeks ago. During that visit we were impressed enough with their home brews that we brought a growler of Mandarin Dream home with us, with the intent of returning for the one year celebration. It was a good idea. I remember being impressed that Beachwood was only one year old, yet had nine different brews …

Tasting Allagash Brewing at The Rockefeller

Last night The Rockefeller in Hermosa Beach had a beer tasting featuring Allagash Brewing, from Portland, ME. Allagash specializes in Belgian style brews and I had tried their Allagash White on draught and really enjoyed it, so I did not hesitate in accepting the invitation to try five more of their brews. The downside was that the beers were brought in bottles, which [in my personal opinion] is never as good as on tap. Storing the bottles on ice just made the beer colder than I would have preferred, but the glasses were small and my hands are warm so …

Neal Bracewell Insurance, ribbon cutting

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) welcomed a new business to Torrance with a ribbon cutting today, Neal Bracewell, State Farm Insurance. This is the first ribbon cutting I attended that was not held at the end of the business day and it is Monday, a couple days before the 4th of July. I fully expected the event to be a little less well-attended than usual, but it was actually quite the opposite; the place was packed. It was pretty clear that Neal has a lot of family and friends supporting his new venture and that combined with the …
