Eating for better health

Okay, I know in my last RAD Caregiver post I said that my next article would be discussing stem cell research and Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease, but we recently started a group on Facebook, I Take Pictures of My Fruits and Vegetables Before I Juice Them, and we have had many people express interest in our new eating habits; in particular, what recipes we use. Well, the fact of the matter is that we do not have any recipes at all. However, we do have a lot of photos, so if you look at them you will see the recipe. I …

Torrance Fire Fighters Association 40th Annual Spaghetti Dinner

These photos were taken tonight at the 40th Annual Spaghetti Dinner to benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Foundation which was sponsored by the Torrance Fire Fighters Association. The family friendly event was held at the Ken Miller Recreation Center in Torrance, CA. While I have lived in Torrance for more than 40 years and I had been aware of the event, it took joining the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce to get me to finally attend one. I have to admit, I had a good time and it looked like everyone else did as well. There were firefighters …

Experium Science Academy opens in Torrance

Today I headed to another ribbon cutting with the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, this time for the Experium Science Academy. I have heard several people talk about Experium at various TACC events, so I was happy to learn about this event as I knew it would present plenty of nice photo opportunities. I was not disappointed. The Experium Science Academy is a hands on science laboratory for kids K-12, that specializes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. I have to admit, I was impressed. I remembered back to when I was a young boy, I thought I was destined to …

Rock ‘n Roll Pasadena Half Marathon Photos

These photos were taken at the first annual Rock ‘n Roll Pasadena Half Marathon, which was held this morning in Pasadena, CA as a benefit to Cure Mito. Cure Mito is an organization supporting Mitochondrial Disease advocacy, awareness and research. As mitochondrial disorders affect primarily children and includes diseases such as RAD, it was pretty much a given that I was going to get up early to cover this event. The Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Series travels across the United States and parts of Europe, with each event supporting a different charity. The last event I attended in October raised …

Photos from the PVP Chamber Evening Mixer

Tonight we headed up to the Rolling Hills Country Club to attend the PVP Chamber Regional Mixer. Being members of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) offers us the opportunity to network with business owners that are members of other chambers, so naturally we want to take advantage of the opportunities whenever they present themselves. Tonight’s event included members of various South Bay chambers including Carson, El Segundo, Gardena Valley, Harbor City/Harbor Gateway, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Lawndale, LAX Coastal Area, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Peninsula, Redondo Beach, San Pedro, Torrance and Wilmington. We had a great time, made …

Valentines Soiree at Redondo Beach Castle

Last night we headed back over to the Redondo Beach Castle for another fundraiser, this time with a portion of the proceeds going to ChildHelp.org. Child Help is an organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. The Redondo Beach Castle is owned by Lady of Magic, Sisuepahn Phila who puts on a great magic show. The evening also included live music, wine tasting provided by Tom Stangl of the South Bay Wine Lovers Meet Up, more magic by Dave Cox and a belly dancer. It was an entertaining evening for a good cause. Judging by the photos, …

Bassett Home Furnishings Opens in Torrance

I went to my first ribbon cutting ceremony today, at Bassett Home Furnishings in Torrance, CA. As a member of the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce, it is expected that I support local businesses and help welcome new ones. The best way I know how is with my camera, so here are a few photos from the Bassett Home Furnishings. While waiting for the ribbon cutting ceremony to begin I took a stroll through their store and they appeared to have a lot of nice custom furniture available for just about every room. If you are local, you might check …

TACC Networking at Noon for February

These photos are from the TACC Networking at Noon lunch at Depot Restaurant in Torrance, CA. Back in December I mentioned that Tanya and I had joined the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce and while I was out of town and Tanya was not in any condition to go anywhere in January, we are back into the swing of things and will be whenever we are in town. Today was the Networking at Noon, held the Depot Restaurant in downtown Torrance. They are celebrating 20 years in business, so I guess Chef Shafer is doing something right. It was a …

Lady of Magic at Farm Stand Restaurant

Last night we drove to El Segundo to go to the Farm Stand Restaurant for dinner and to enjoy a little table magic performed by our new friend, the Lady of Magic, Sisuepahn Phila. We met Sisuepahn at her New Year’s Eve party/fundraiser for the Midnight Mission, which is a homeless shelter in downtown Los Angeles. I have to admit, I really enjoy watching her perform as it is so much more than just slight of hand card tricks. I promise, you will be amazed if you get the chance to see it yourself. That being said, this Saturday there …

Saturday morning at Torrance Farmers Market

Long time readers know that I took up juicing about 18 months ago. When Tanya would come out I would offer a taste of the concoctions I made, but her reaction was along the lines of it was not terrible. She was not impressed. A few weeks after she moved in, someone mentioned the movie, “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.” It seems like she immediately went to Netflix and put it on my streaming list. We watched the movie that night. The next day, Tanya asked if I would show her how to use the juicer. As you can imagine, …
