Saturday at the Torrance Farmers Market

There has been a lot of healthy activity in our household lately, and not just Tanya’s miraculous change in her well-being; we have also recently released a book of juicing recipes, “Faces of Juicing, Visual Juicing Recipes.” When the book was released Tanya suggested that she wanted to go on a juice fast; I just tried to change the subject when she brought it up. Since Tanya has recently learned that most of her health issues appeared to be the result of a profound Vitamin B7 deficiency, otherwise known as Biotinidase Deficiency, she started taking Biotin a week ago and …

Adult Biotinidase Deficiency and you

To say that this has been an amazing week would be an understatement; I would go so far as to suggest that it has been a miraculous week. I would like you to take a look at the photo of Tanya, to the left. I took that photo this afternoon (Saturday, July 27); there is no way Tanya would have even attempted jumping up like that a week ago. The fact of the matter is that in recent weeks, Tanya has been extremely clumsy; tripping over her own feet and walking into walls became pretty standard occurrences. She had numbness …

Practicing medicine

Sometimes clichés are just a little too accurate; for example, to say doctors are just practicing medicine is sad but true and that is what brought about my writing of this particular article. Since I expect that there are new readers here that do not know the back story to my adventure in medicine, I will give a quick review. If you would like more details, you can click the link to the RAD Caregiver category. In a nutshell; my girlfriend Tanya was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) in 2004. In October of 2011 Tanya moved from Indiana to California …

Memorial Day Weekend at South Coast Botanic Garden

Saturday was the beginning of the long 2013 Memorial Day weekend and since Tanya has been working pretty hard getting her new book, Faces of Juicing, ready for publishing, we decided to take advantage of the great weather and pay another visit to the South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The South Coast Botanic Garden is huge with over 40,000 trees and 200,000 plants, so we are able to return several times a year and it always looks at least a little different as different plants bloom at different times of the year. There are several species …

Celebrating Tanya’s birthday & health

Wednesday was Tanya’s birthday and since she has been feeling much better over that past couple of months, combined with the fact that she has been working pretty hard lately, we decided to take a couple days off to celebrate her birthday. We started off on Wednesday at Matsuyama Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar and had a couple friends join us. Anyone that has been following this blog for a while knows that we are huge fans of Matsuyama Sushi, so that was a good start to the day. We then decided to go out to Palos Verdes to see …

Celebrating one month pain free

Back in August I mentioned that Tanya had started using a new drug to combat the pain from her Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease (aka RAD or RA) she has been living with since 2003. She had been using Enbrel for quite some time, but it did not seem to be doing any good, so Cimzia was suggested. These kinds of drugs usually take a while to get into her system before they start working, and she was in a terrible amount of pain, so her new Rheumatologist started her on various sleeping pills and anti-anxiety pills; but nothing seemed to help. …

Is it Spring yet?

The almanac says spring does not begin this year until March 20; but with the weather we have been having around here, you could have surprised me. It was almost summer-like around here over the weekend. Since Tanya’s RA/RAD has not been bothering her lately, she has wanted to take advantage of the great weather and the lack of pain by spending more time outside. Sunday we took another trip to the South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Palos Verdes Estates. The South Coast Botanic Garden is 87 acres of trees, flowers, birds, lizards, squirrels and …

A day at Descanso Gardens

Tanya has been feeling a lot better lately; so much better that she actually forgot to take the shots that she is usually counting down the days before she can use again. Trust me when I say, this is a very good thing. We have been tied up at home lately, Tanya especially as she has been doing some website design for a few new clients. Since she had some free time and the weather was in the mid-70’s, I knew I had to get her out of the house. My friends at BeersInParadise.com told me that Stone Brewing Co …

The people, bands and equestrian units of the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade

These photos were taken at the 124th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade, held January 1, 2013. Once again, I have taken too many photos to put in one gallery, so I have broken them up into two groups. This gallery consists of basically anything that was not a float; marching bands, equestrian units and basic people watching. I was set up at Colorado Boulevard and Allen Avenue, primarily on the southeast corner. As this is a very large gallery, you might find it easier to view using the slideshow feature; you can use the full screen option for the best …

Living with RA: One year later

A few weeks ago several of my siblings came into town to attend a function that was honoring my dad and a few others that attend his church. One of my brothers asked me if I was going to continue writing about life with Rheumatoid Arthritis or not. Apparently he had enjoyed reading my perspective. I explained to him that while I was continuing to do as I had promised as far as bringing awareness of RA and of the Rheumatoid Patient Foundation, I was doing it primarily by donating watermarks on some of my photos to the Rheumatoid Patient …
