Monkish Brewing Co celebrates one year

This weekend marked one year that our friends at Monkish Brewing Company in Torrance have been in business, brewing Belgian style beers. A microbrewery that started off with 9 beers (from what I read), Monkish Brewing has now done 17 different beers, with the latest being a collaboration with Select Beer Store owner, Wes; who was Monkish Brewing’s first account and is a home brewer. The beer is called Select Monk 1, and is a variation of Wes’ recipe; an abbey-style ale with oats, wheat and barley. It is pretty tasty, if you like Crux or Oblate, you will enjoy …

Celebrating one month pain free

Back in August I mentioned that Tanya had started using a new drug to combat the pain from her Rheumatoid Autoimmune Disease (aka RAD or RA) she has been living with since 2003. She had been using Enbrel for quite some time, but it did not seem to be doing any good, so Cimzia was suggested. These kinds of drugs usually take a while to get into her system before they start working, and she was in a terrible amount of pain, so her new Rheumatologist started her on various sleeping pills and anti-anxiety pills; but nothing seemed to help. …

Torrance Firefighters’ 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner

These photos were taken Saturday at the Torrance Firefighters Association’s 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner which is a fundraiser to benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Foundation (www.aarbf.org). The proceeds go towards sending young burn victims to Champ Camp, a week long summer camp for burn survivors ages 5-16. In addition to the spaghetti dinners served, the women’s auxiliary of the Torrance Firefighters Association had a bake sale with all kinds of homemade goodies. It was another fine turnout and all the volunteers made sure cups were filled and tables were cleared and set for the next guest. I know …

Business & Beer Joins Meetup at Alpine Inn

These photos are from our Business & Beer gathering at Alpine Inn, located at the Alpine Village in Torrance. Over the weekend we decided that we would try out the Meetup business networking platform to see if we could generate some additional interest from people that do not use Facebook. What we did not realize is that they have an approval process, so it took a few days before we were actually added to the system. In two days we got 10 new members, but as far as attendance is concerned, we had two people that joined us as a …

Torrance Firefighters to hold 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser

This Saturday, March 9 2013, the Torrance Firefighters Association will hold their 41st Annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser to benefit the Alisa Ann Ruch California Burn Foundation (www.aarbf.org). The dinner will be held at the Ken Miller Recreation Center Auditorium. The money raised goes towards sending children to Champ Camp, a week long, residential summer camp for burn survivors ages 5-16, who have been treated at California hospitals or are current residents of California. Tanya and I went last year and had a great time. While it is put on by the Torrance Firefighters Association, there is participation from agencies all …

Is it Spring yet?

The almanac says spring does not begin this year until March 20; but with the weather we have been having around here, you could have surprised me. It was almost summer-like around here over the weekend. Since Tanya’s RA/RAD has not been bothering her lately, she has wanted to take advantage of the great weather and the lack of pain by spending more time outside. Sunday we took another trip to the South Coast Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Palos Verdes Estates. The South Coast Botanic Garden is 87 acres of trees, flowers, birds, lizards, squirrels and …

A visit to Craft Brewing Co and Claremont Craft Ales

I am usually the one trying to get someone to go for a bike ride and coming up with the destinations, so when my friend Phil asked me if I wanted to join him for a ride out to Chino I said yes and searched Google for a microbrewery in the area. When I woke up Saturday, I knew it was going to be a great day for a ride as it was already 70 at 9:00 AM. Since the person Phil wanted to visit in Chino was not home yet, we decided to visit some mutual friends in Lake …

Strand Brewing Co hosts another Business & Beer

The South Bay’s most fun business networking group, Business & Beer, returned to the Strand Brewing Company tasting room Thursday and I think it is safe to say that everyone had a good time. We had close to 15 people come by with several of them being second time attendees. In addition, Rich Marcello, one of the co-owners of Strand Brewing Co, is always good about directing his customers that might benefit from our networking group over to us. We definitely appreciate it. For those that are familiar with Strand Brewing Company but have not visited in the last couple …
